ATM Safety Tips

Woman guarding her ATM while withdrawing cash at an ATM

Using an ATM has become such a routine, everyday errand for most of us that it’s easy to completely lose the sharp sense of caution that should always accompany handling cold, hard cash.

Whether you are pulling out cash for a weekend garage sale, a local farmers market, or a quick dinner drop, breaking that auto-pilot routine is your first line of defense.

Before you insert your card this week, pull up this straightforward, phase-by-phase ATM field guide to protect both your physical safety and your financial perimeter:

Phase 1: Before You Approach (The Setup)

  • 👀 Scout the Location: Prioritize ATMs located in highly visible, well-trafficked, and brightly lit environments. Avoid machines tucked around the corners of buildings (which create dangerous blind spots) or obscured by overgrown trees and landscaping. Criminals explicitly target isolated machines because they are infinitely easier to tamper with unseen.
  • 👀 Minimize the Incentives: Leave expensive statement jewelry or visible valuables at home or out of sight in your vehicle. Don’t give a potential assailant an added reason to target you.
  • 👀 Be Ready to Act: Have your debit card pulled out and secure in your hand before you step out of your vehicle or approach the terminal. Never stand directly in front of a machine fumbling blindly through a purse or wallet.
  • 👀 The Vehicle Buffer: When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, your doors locked, and your passenger windows completely rolled up. Always leave enough physical breathing room between your bumper and the vehicle ahead of you so you can easily maneuver your car out of the lane if an emergency arises.

Phase 2: At the Machine (The Transaction)

  • 🔍 Inspect for Digital Skimmers: Before inserting your plastic, perform a quick three-second visual and physical audit of the machine. Look for misaligned plastic molding, sticky adhesive residue, loose or extra attachments stacked over the card slot, or noticeable physical resistance when typing on the keypad. If anything wiggles, looks crooked, or feels suspicious, terminate the transaction immediately.
  • 🔍 Shield Your Core PIN: Even if you think you are completely alone in the lane, always use your secondary hand or your body to physically shield the keypad as you enter your PIN. Sophisticated modern skimming rings frequently hide microscopic pinhole cameras on the upper molding of the machine specifically to record your hand movements.
  • 🔍 Maintain Personal Boundaries: When using a walk-up machine, stay hyper-aware of the space behind you. If a stranger approaches too closely or violates your comfort zone, cancel your transaction instantly, collect your card, and walk away.

Phase 3: After You Finish (The Departure)

  • 💵 Ditch the Count: The second the machine dispenses your cash, immediately tuck it directly into your pocket or purse. Never stand at the terminal counting, shuffling, or visibly displaying paper bills. Count your cash safely later once you are locked inside your vehicle or home.
  • 💵 Audit Your Mirrors: As you pull away or walk back to your vehicle, check your surroundings to ensure you aren’t being followed. If you suspect a vehicle or individual is trailing you, do not drive home. Navigate immediately to the nearest police station, fire precinct, or heavily crowded, well-lit business environment.
  • 💵 If a Confrontation Occurs—Comply: If you are ever involved in a direct confrontation where an assailant demands your cash, COMPLY completely. Your physical life and safety are infinitely more valuable than a stack of paper. Step away safely, then immediately report the incident to local law enforcement and our team.

Special Precautions for Nighttime Visits

If your schedule forces you to utilize a walk-up ATM after the sun goes down, deploy these extra defensive layers:

  • Bring a trusted companion with you whenever humanly possible.
  • Park your vehicle as close to the terminal as possible in a clear, well-illuminated spot.
  • If the canopy or parking lot lights at a specific machine are flickering or completely out, do not use it. Drive to a different location.

Put Your Ultimate Safety Net on Autopilot

Physical vigilance at the terminal is critical, but you can layer an extra bulletproof digital shield over your data layout using the free tools inside your online banking app.

By utilizing ATFCU’s digital Card Management dashboard, you can keep your debit card toggled completely “Off” on your phone, flipping it “On” for just the 30 seconds you spend standing at the machine. If a scammer has managed to install an invisible skimmer, the stolen data is completely useless to them because your card remains locked tight the second you walk away!
