2026 Annual Meeting Celebrated the Spirit of '76

The 76th Annual Meeting of Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union was held on Thursday, April 9 in the Exhibit Hall of the Abilene Convention Center.  Doors opened at 6:30 pm and Cooper High School’s Red, Rhythm & Blues vocal ensemble performed prior to the business meeting.  Members were provided with a gift bag and individually packaged charcuterie snack boxes.

Board Chairman Royce Curtis called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.  Reports were presented by Mr. Curtis; Board Treasurer Emily Meador; Supervisory Committee Chair Pam Nicholas, and President/CEO James Boyd.  A ceremonial check of $161,475 was presented to Kathy Mashonheimer, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Country.  The amount represents contributions made throughout 2025 by members participating in the Skip-a-Payment program.  Over the program’s 23 year history, more than $3 million has been donated to the B&GCBC.  Staff members Lisa Keith (35 years) and Ali Gutierrez (30 years) were honored for their dedication and long tenure at ATFCU.

Board election results were announced.  Current Board members Terry Bull and Jay Lester were re-elected for 3-year terms.  Joy Wiggins was elected for her first 3-year term.  No questions were asked by attending members and the meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm.

The 77th Annual Meeting of the credit union will be held on April 8, 2027 at 7 pm at the Abilene Convention Center.

New Tax Rules Allow for Vehicle Loan Interest Deduction

For the first time since 1986, some Americans will be eligible to deduct loan interest on their 2025 tax return.  If you and your vehicle meet specific eligibility requirements, a tax deduction of up to $10,000 annually will be allowed.  The deduction is available for both itemizing and not-itemizing taxpayers.  Requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Your loan must have originated after December 31, 2024
  • The vehicle must be brand new and for personal use. (Used vehicles do not qualify.)
  • The vehicle must be a car, SUV, pickup truck, minivan, motorcycle or ATV with a gross vehicle weight of less than 14,000 pounds
  • Final assembly of the vehicle must have taken place in the United States*
  • The vehicle must be secured by a lien from a lender who has a legal interest in the vehicle until it is paid off

For more details on the law, please consult your tax professional and/or the IRS website, irs.gov

*To determine if final assembly was in the US, please reference the information label that was attached to the vehicle on the dealer’s lot OR visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website to use their VIN decoder.
