Anatomy of a Text Scam

Spoofed text scams are circulating almost constantly right now. The formula is always the same: a fraudster sends an urgent alert disguised as a fraud department warning, hoping you will panic and click on an embedded blue link.
Once you click, you are routed to a highly polished, completely fake login screen designed to steal your Social Security number, online banking credentials, or the numbers on your debit card.
If you receive a suspicious alert, delete it immediately. But if you want to catch a text pirate in the act, check out these two insider tips to unmask the scam:
🔍 Two Insider Tips to Unmask a Text Scam
Before you let an urgent message alarm you, look closely at the fine print at the absolute top of your smartphone screen:
- Audit the Phone Number: Look closely at the country and area codes. For example, if a text claiming to be from your local credit union originates from a number like
+1 (929) 604-2500, red flags should fly. That is not an ATFCU number. - Inspect the Senders Domain Name: Look at the actual hyperlink text or the technical sender profile name hidden in the blue text layer. If an official account alert is being routed through a domain like
cliocustomupholstery, you know instantly that a hacker’s automated bot script has hijacked a random commercial server to blast out scams.
What to Do If You Interacted With the Link
If you received a text like this and accidentally clicked the link, your risk depends on what you did next:
- If you just clicked the link but closed it instantly: Your risk is low, but your phone now knows the link was opened. Close all browser tabs, delete the text thread, and do not download any files.
- If you entered your personal or financial details: This is a high-stress situation where time = money. You must launch an immediate counter-attack.
Contact our internal ATFCU Fraud Department as soon as humanly possible at 325-677-2274 or 800-677-6770. Our security teams can immediately freeze your compromised plastics, lock down your digital banking layout, and ensure your checking and savings balances remain entirely secure.
Slow down, inspect the sender, and never let a random text message push you down a financial plank!
