Abilene Teachers FCU History

The first board meeting of ATFCU was called to order on October 15, 1950. The new organization served teachers in the Abilene ISD and was operated by volunteers from a desk drawer in the shop building at Central Elementary School.

In 1960, ATFCU outgrew its original desk and was moved to an office in the AISD administration building. During that decade, the first full time employees were hired. Other Taylor county school districts as well as McMurry and Hardin-Simmons employees were added to the field of membership. Assets reached $1 million in February 1963.

The credit union moved to a permanent home at 2801 N. 6th Street in 1977. Several new products, real estate loans, certificates of deposit and credit cards were added to ATFCU's offerings during the 1970's.

Primarily due to the near-collapse of the savings and loan industry, the 1980's were a decade of explosive growth for the credit union. We began the decade with assets of $17 million which grew to $72 million by decade end. Individual Retirement Accounts were introduced in 1981 and the Southside office at 2555 Buffalo Gap Road opened in December 1988.

We experienced another decade of rapid growth in the 1990's. Assets grew 84% to total $132 million by 2000. The Mockingbird drive-through facility opened for business in June 1997 and a major expansion of the headquarters building was completed in 1999. ATFCU earned its first #1 ranking from federal examiners in 1995. This was the first of many such ratings issued by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

As we navigated the first decade of a new century, ATFCU's field of membership was expanded to include all residents of Taylor and Callahan counties as well as school district employees in 14 surrounding counties. Online banking and online bill payment were made available in 2000. The Eastside branch at 1181 E.N. 10th Street began operations in November, 2007. Assets more than doubled to reach $300 million by the end of 2010. To serve our rapidly expanding membership, ground was broken in 2009 for a new headquarters building at 3849 Antilley Road.  That state-of-the-art facility (featuring the largest consumer drive-through banking center in Abilene!) was opened in February 2011.

Our future is bright and we thank our 37,000 friends and neighbors who trust us with their financial needs. We look forward to serving you with personal attention and the latest technology.
