Your Complete Guide to Buying an RV or ATV

family driving RV down road

If you are dreaming of open-road family adventures, weekend camping trips, or exploring the Texas backcountry, an RV, campervan, or All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) might be the perfect addition to your lifestyle.

Purchasing a recreational vehicle is an exciting milestone, but it is also a major investment. To help you make the absolute best decision for your family’s budget and expectations, we’ve put together the ultimate first-time buyer’s guide.

Step 1: Determine Your Vehicle Class

The Three Motorized RV Classes

  • Class A (The Houses on Wheels): These are the largest, most luxurious motorhomes on the highway. Built on commercial truck or bus chassis, they feature full-size kitchens, private bedrooms, luxury couches, and can comfortably sleep up to 10 people. Modern price tags typically start around $100,000 and can scale past a million for custom diesel pushers.
  • Class B (The Campervans): Think of these as a standard van body optimized to a postage-stamp size. They feature scaled-down kitchenettes and compact wet baths, comfortably sleeping 2 to 3 people. Because of their agility, ease of parking, and high-end tech, they are incredibly popular—expect price tags ranging from $90,000 to $200,000+.
  • Class C (The Sweet Spot): Recognized by their distinctive over-the-cab sleeping alcoves, Class C motorhomes strike a perfect middle ground. They offer significantly more living space and amenities than a Class B van without the intimidating driving footprint of a massive Class A. New models generally range from $80,000 to $250,000.
  • Don’t forget the Towables: If you already own a capable truck, looking into a Travel Trailer or a Fifth Wheel is often the most budget-friendly way to get into the RV lifestyle without purchasing a separate engine!

The Two Main ATV Categories

  • Utility ATVs (The Workhorses): Designed with heavy-duty tasks, property management, and hunting in mind. They feature larger tires, robust cargo racks, high towing capacities, and are generally built for steady durability over raw speed.
  • Sport ATVs (The Trail Blazers): Engineered purely for recreation, performance, and agility. They feature lightweight frames, advanced suspension systems for handling jumps, and quick acceleration. Depending on the brand and modifications, new ATVs can range from $6,000 to over $25,000 for fully loaded, side-by-side sport models.

Step 2: Weigh the Pros and Cons of New vs. Used

Buying New

  • The Perks: You get a pristine vehicle with zero wear-and-tear, a manufacturer’s bumper-to-bumper warranty, and immediate access to the latest fuel-efficient layouts and digital tech. Financing a new recreational vehicle also tends to unlock lower promotional interest rates.
  • The Catch: Recreational vehicles experience steep depreciation the exact moment you drive them off the dealership lot.

Buying Used

  • The Perks: Letting a previous owner absorb that initial wave of depreciation can save your household thousands—or even tens of thousands—of dollars.
  • The Catch: Pre-owned RVs require a meticulous inspection to check for hidden issues like roof water leaks or engine wear. Additionally, specialized commercial lenders sometimes charge slightly higher interest rates or require larger down payments on used recreational collateral.

Step 3: Secure Your Pre-Approval Before You Shop

Walking onto a dealership lot with a pre-approval in hand completely changes the dynamic. It keeps you in total control of your budget and prevents you from getting talked into high-pressure dealer financing add-ons.
