Smart Change

Put Your Spare Change to Work

Small actions, made consistently over time, can result in big changes.  Save for your dreams and support causes you care about with everyday purchases. The Smart Change tool in digital banking rounds up your debit card purchases to the nearest dollar and deposits the change in your savings account.  Watch the video, enroll and start saving right away!

  • Save Automatically – grow your savings without even thinking about it. Round ups are a simple way to build your emergency fund, plan for big goals, or cushion your everyday budget
  • Give with Purpose – send your spare change to a nonprofit you care about. Small amounts add up for impact when others chip in.
  • Some of Both – you choose how your change is allocated and determine limits if you desire.

The video shows instructions for Smart Change enrollment in the ATFCU app.  To enroll using online banking, login to your account and click the Additional Services heading.  Click Smart Change on the resulting menu and follow the prompts.

Smart Change Frequently Asked Questions

You can designate any savings account (including a money market account) on which you are the primary owner. However, it is not possible to send your round ups to another member’s savings account.

No. The Smart Change program is designed so that it will not permit a round up to be made if the round up amount would cause a negative balance in your checking account.

There are two ways. Please choose the one that is most helpful to you.

  • The easiest is to tap the round up widget in the ATFCU app or click on it in online banking. The resulting screen will show your total Round Up Savings at the top and detail them below.
  • Alternately, view your Checking Account history in either the app or online banking.  Your round ups will show as transfers to your Savings account. Please note – if you made several debit transactions during a specific day, the various round up amounts will be added together and shown as a single transfer on that date.
