Fraud Alert

Ongoing Text Fraud – A hacker is currently targeting ATFCU members with a fake text titled ATFCU FRAUD ALERT.  The text comes from various 800 numbers, not from a 325 area code.  If you respond, he states that he is with the credit union Fraud Department and has given his name as Matthew or Terry (and likely several others).  He “proves” he is with ATFCU by quoting your Social Security number.  Do not have a conversation with this person and immediately contact our Fraud Team at 325-677-2274 if you have already done so. Learn more.

5 Discounts for Boomers and some Gen X’ers

older man and woman looking at phone

I’m sure we all know a ‘Boomer’ or two (or a lot)! And if you are asking yourself, “What is a boomer?” Well the definition of a ‘boomer’ is anyone born after World War II between 1946 and 1964. My parents are boomers and my mom is proud of it! We even have a life group at my church just for the BOOMERS. Some of these discounts will not only apply to boomers but Gen X’ers as well. I am a proud Gen X’er but barely made the cutoff. Generation X is anyone born between 1965 and 1980. You get discounts now too!!

One of the perks of advancing in years is scoring great deals on all kinds of purchases and expenses. Here are five places you may not already know about where older adults can save big money:

1. Amazon Prime

Older adults who have valid EBT cards, or are on Medicaid, are eligible for Amazon Prime Access at just $6.99 a month. Compared to the $14.99 regular cost, that saves you more than $84 annually.

2. Auto insurance

Many auto insurance providers reward years of safe driving with discounts for policyholders who are age 55-plus. Be sure to shop around for the best deal or to ask your current provider if you qualify for a discount.

3. Dining out

Dozens of national restaurant chains offer discounts, or even freebies, for older adults. Why pay full price when dining out when you don’t have to?

Here are just a few chains that offer discounts:

Applebee’s: 15% off with Golden Apple Card (60-plus)
Arby’s: 10% off (55-plus)
Burger King: 10% off (60-plus)
Chili’s: 10% off (55-plus)
Dunkin’ Donuts: 10% off or free donut with coffee purchase (55-plus)
IHOP: 10% off (55-plus)
KFC: Free small drink with any meal (55-plus)
Krispy Kreme: 10% off (50-plus)
McDonald’s: Varies by location; most provide discounted beverages (55-plus)
Subway: 10% off (60-plus)
Taco Bell: 5% off; free beverages (65-plus)
Village Inn: 10% off (55-plus)
Waffle House: 10% off every Monday (60-plus)
Wendy’s: 10% off (55-plus)
White Castle: 10% off (62-plus)

4. Cellphone plans

From basic phones to the latest in smartphone technology, if you’ve lived through bell-bottoms and Beatlemania, you can get your cell phone plan for less!

Verizon offers its 55+ Senior Phone Plan, T-Mobile has a program named Unlimited 55+ Discount Plan and AT&T offers the AT&T Unlimited 55+ Plan. Check with your provider for prices and plan features.

5. Refer to one of these websites for the latest offers

AARP is a senior advocacy and consumer protection organization that works 24/7/365 on behalf of senior Americans. Their annual membership fee is small and the discounts you will receive by being an AARP member will pay for it many times over.  Their website is aarp.org

The Senior List is exactly what it says it is – a categorized list of senior discounts. Another list worth consulting is Senior Living.

All three organizations offer the same basic information, so choose the one that you find easiest to navigate.
