Be Proactive

Abilene Teachers FCU has many ways to help you protect your accounts.  Most of the tools described below are available in our digital banking platforms – the ATFCU mobile app for smartphones and tablets and/or ATFCU’s desktop banking for computers.

Security Strategies We Recommend

  • Keep us informed of changes in your mailing address, your email address and your phone numbers.  Fast action is often essential when suspicious activity is underway.  We could need to contact you quickly.
  • Monitor your account(s) regularly for unusual transactions. Monthly checks are no longer adequate. Daily tracking can help you notice irregularities right away.
  • Quickly lock or unlock your ATFCU debit and credit cards by using the Card Management feature in digital banking.
  • Set up alerts to stay informed about activity on your accounts. You can specify dollar amounts, merchant categories, geographic locations, and more.
  • Sign up to receive Extractos electrónicos and eNotices to help reduce the risk of identity theft from stolen mail.
  • Enable facial recognition in the ATFCU mobile app.

Never Stop Learning

We have additional fraud information available for those wishing to take a deeper dive.  Whether you are adding to your own knowledge or advising others, keep in mind that cybercriminals are pros.  They’re trained to scare you, to build urgency or, if the situation requires, they will speak like a trusted friend.

The vast majority of offers that feel too good to be true are no true.  Trust your instincts when something about a situation feels odd or unusual. Call our Fraud team at 325-677-2274 or 800-677-6770 anytime you would like an experienced opinion.

Our list of common scams presents a wealth of information in a short, easy to read format.  We also offer a number of blog posts that will boost your financial savvy.

Outside Resources

Here are some nonprofit and government resources we recommend.

The Federal Trade Commission has two specialty websites to assist in fighting this continuing problem.

The National Credit Union Association (the same agency that insures your deposits at ATFCU) also runs a Fraud Protection Center.

Consumer Reports ($39 annual membership) is a nonprofit organization that offers a truly outstanding Fraud Information Center which is regularly updated with the latest scams.

AARP ($15 annual membership) is another nonprofit with a focus on fraud.  Their Fraud Watch Network offers articles and a call center where you can speak to fraud specialists.

Finally, there is a stand-alone Security page on our website that is written by one of AFTCU’s security training partners. It is comprehensive, complex, interesting, and not for the faint of heart.  We recommend small doses for this one.
