Target Data Breach

January 15 update: Target has released details about the identity theft and credit monitoring program that will be provided free to their customers affected by the data breach. You can learn more and/or register for the progam here.

ATFCU continues to recommend card replacement for members who used their debit cards at Target between November 27 and December 15. If we have identified your card to be at risk, and if you have not already replaced it, you will be receiving a reminder letter from us within the next few days. We encourage you to make the replacement as soon as possible.

January 10 update: Target now reports that personal information - including phone numbers and email and mailing addresses - was stolen from as many as 70 million customers in the pre-Christmas data breach. This is in addition to the 40 million reported earlier.

Target says it will try to contact customers for whom it has email addresses to provide tips on how to safeguard against consumer scams. ATFCU has serious concerns about this method of communication since email addresses are part of the stolen information.  If you receive an email that is supposed to be from Target, do not click on any links within the message and do not supply any personal financial information.

Target also has plans to offer a free year of credit monitoring and identity protection to customers who shopped at their stores during the affected time period. They will provide more information on that service next week.

On Dec. 19 Target Stores confirmed a nationwide data breach of credit and debit card information. Several days later they further reported that Personal Identification Number (PIN) data was also stolen from their computer system. More information can be viewed on the on the Target website.

We are recommending card replacement for our members who used an ATFCU debit and/or credit card at any Target store between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15. Same day debit card replacement is available at all branches. Members requiring credit card replacement should contact our Plastic Card department at 325-677-2274 or 800-677-6770. We also strongly recommend that you use online and mobile banking to closely monitor activity in your accounts which might be impacted.

A popular Target product is their REDCard that offers a 5% discount on purchases. The REDcard debit card is linked to a customer's checking account. A REDCard credit card is a stand alone credit card product. Data was breached on both types of these cards. Again, we recommend that you keep a very close eye on your accounts affiliated with REDCards and follow the instructions detailed on the Target website.

Various forms of secondary fraud related to the data breach are ongoing. In Abilene, area residents have received phone calls and text messages informing them that their 'Abilene Credit Union' debit card may have been compromised and is being placed on hold. The listener is requested to press 1 on the keypad and then enter their card number. Please do not fall victim to this scam and be aware that criminals are eager to take advantage of the situation.
